Nundini Italian Deli & Food Store

Category: Grocery
Neighborhood: The Heights

I found heaven at Nundini's.  It was in the form of a parma sandwich on ciabatta.  I had a brief conversation with the owner or manager, dunno which, regarding the importation of his barratta, a mozzarella-like cheese he flies in weekly from Italy.  And...here's what clenched it for me...they have wifi.  And no one's here.  And I am working and everyone is acting like I belong here working at this table.  And I do.

Okay, I realize that this is not a really good review in that it doesn't really describe the place.  But, trust me, you want to come here.  They supply many of the upscale restaurants in town, you would be doing yourself a favor to skip the middle man and get some fixin's from Nundini.

I have been going here for 2 years and 10 months (you do the math, I have a 2-year old).  As the others indicated, the female doctors are a plus if you are shy (which I'm not) or if you appreciate people who identify with your health issues (which I do).  The staff is amazingly nice.  The only time I've had to wait was when my doctor's patient went into labor and she was on call.  Usually they are busy when lots of patients decide to go into labor at once.  They have been through a lot with me and have been gracious and supportive through it all.  They entertained my stupid first-pregnancy questions and concerns and treated each issue seriously and with respect.  They also have privileges at the Texas Woman's Hospital next door which is why I picked them in the first place.

Getting my feet rubbed as I'm writing this. I've been coming here for nearly 8 years and have had an awesome experience. It is clean and cheap and there are always familiar faces. I would not go anywhere else. Even my pedis from fancy salons don't last as long. There is a wait at peak hours at lunch and after work. Otherwise you can get in and out pretty quick as a walkin!

Love this place for the fajitas and the sandbox.  The sandbox is WAY too crowded in the evenings to take my toddler so we end up getting there pretty early (like 5).  Last time we were still there around 7 it got pretty crazy in the box.  I remember saying "It's like Lord of the Flies in there!"  I also wish they would fence in the sandbox a little better so I wouldn't have to go chasing H around so he won't run into the parking lot.  If you are going to place a playground with an entrance that is 10 steps from a parking lot, it should be closed off and gated.  There is a fence but it doesn't go all the way around the play area so the kids run through the bar area at will.

Lupe T's is great but go when its not peak hours.  If you go when its crowded expect craziness and overwhelmed staff.  Even then the staff is extremely courteous to us moms, even if we are stopping a sand fight with one arm and swilling a marg with the other.

Petrol Station Coffeehouse

This is a great place to go for a coffee and/or beer.  The owners are adding on a kitchen so soon you will be able to get a burger and fries with your latte.  They roast their own beans.  Their drafts are only $3 which totally rocks.  The laid back homey atmosphere is actually what I love about this place.  I truly hope they leave the play area in the back after the renovations b/c that is the reason I plan to come here at least once a week with H.  It is a lot less crowded than the other places that have outdoor play areas (i.e. Lupe Tortilla).  And the backyard/porch area is very secure for the young ones because it is fenced in.  Can I tell you how much of a welcome addition this is to my weekly outing rotation?  H loves it here and there are other kids to play with.  Mommy can kick back and relax, chat with friends.  All the negatives the other reviewers are citing are actually positives for me.

Cafe Red Onion

Cafe Red Onion is easily one of my favorite restaurants in Houston.  It actually started off as a hole-in-the-wall place in the strip center across the road where they now have Cafe Red Onion Seafood y Mas.  This is great Latin American food with a concentration on Honduran food.  When they were in the old location you could get my favorite Chicken Belize for under $8.  The prices are higher now but the restaurant is beautiful and the food is just as good.  The owners are so nice and so is the staff, this is truly food made with love.  It is definitely a case where I am glad they finally got their come-up'ins as we say in the South.

Now they have the headquarters next door with a gift shop.  I have not been to the gift shop but our waiter says that the owner/chef is building a teaching kitchen in the headquarters so he can teach classes!  I cannot wait.  Other than Chicken Belize I love the fish tacos and anything with plantains or yucca.  I just ate there for lunch and I already want to go back!

I love El Rey!  This one is the closest to my house and I drive through here at least once every couple of weeks.  It is very clean and there is a lot of seating, more than the Shepherd location.  My favorite things to get are the ropa vieja plate, fish tacos, rotisserie chicken, and quesadillas for my son.  They also make great breakfast tacos and are not skimpy on the avocado if you add it!  I always get a side of plantains too.  And the lemon aid rocks!

I agree with Connie that not all the flavors are distinctive.  Though I really like the coconut, raspberry and plain.  I love all the fruit toppings they have and I love that it is by the ounce so you just load it up!  My favorite toppings are all the berries, mango and chocolate covered sunflower seeds.

I went there for the first time with my son and we were the only people there in the afternoon.  The guys working there were super nice even though my toddler was running wild while I tried all the flavors.  They entertained him and were impressed with his club dancing skills.  They play music and have videos on the screens so my kid is down with that.  I also like the orange chairs.  I seriously would be here every day if not for having a wild child to contend with!  I have to try the mochi next time.  I am used to it being wrapped around ice cream not in it!

Joy Yoga Center

I have been going to Joy Yoga on and off for about 4 years.  It was my first experience with yoga and I keep coming back because I truly believe that their style of practice is the best for me and my personality.  Most of the teachers do a Vinyasa style, flowing and connected.  The new location is amazing, clean and comfortable.  I was afraid that it would be too sterile after the cozy hole-in-the-wall prior location, but it had the same energy as the old place.  I was completely comfortable and happy.

Like Melody, Joy Yoga helped me through a particularly difficult time in my life and has helped me transform my body and mind and improved my overall wellbeing!  Okay, yes, I drank the Kool-Aid...

La Griglia Restaurant

I've always loved La Griglia, even after it was bought out by the Landry's conglomerate.  They have actually left most as-is and it is still consistently good, fresh food cooked well.  It is a great place to get high quality well prepared food (made with love) and a glass of wine.  We stopped in for a late bite one night a few weeks ago and sat at the bar.  We had clams and a glass of wine.  The clams were amazing and were true to what clams are supposed to be!  It's about the sauce, the clam juice that is released during cooking.  And the bread basket they brought us was perfect for sopping up said sauce!  The bartender was really nice and gave us great service.  I am going to have to go back soon for those clams!
