I found heaven at Nundini's.  It was in the form of a parma sandwich on ciabatta.  I had a brief conversation with the owner or manager, dunno which, regarding the importation of his barratta, a mozzarella-like cheese he flies in weekly from Italy.  And...here's what clenched it for me...they have wifi.  And no one's here.  And I am working and everyone is acting like I belong here working at this table.  And I do.

Okay, I realize that this is not a really good review in that it doesn't really describe the place.  But, trust me, you want to come here.  They supply many of the upscale restaurants in town, you would be doing yourself a favor to skip the middle man and get some fixin's from Nundini.

If you were to drive past Nundini's on Shepherd and you weren't looking for it, you might never even know it was there.  The exterior is the corrugated metal typical of all the warehouses in the area, belying Nundini's history as a wholesaler of Italian foods that wasn't open to the public.  Thankfully, it has since expanded into a top-notch grocer and restaurant that welcomes connoisseurs of Italian food.

The wonderful thing about Nundini's isn't just the array of authentic Italian ingredients that can be purchased there, but the fact that you can also grab a delicious sandwich or panini and a creamy gelato during your trip.  Nundini's is the only place where I know I can buy the special canned tomatoes I use for my homemade marinara sauce, as well as one of the best (and cheapest!) places to buy fresh-sliced Italian meats and cheeses.  They also sell olive oil and rice in bulk, at prices far below any other grocers or wholesalers.

Their sandwiches are your typical, mouthwatering Italian offerings: proscuitto, sopressata and even meatball if you come on the right day.  During the week, the lunch specials provide chips and a drink along with your sandwich for less than $6.  After your meal, don't miss out on their gelato, which is unarguably the best in town.  The pistachio is a personal favorite: sweet, nutty and slightly salty, with a texture like velvet.

Unfortunately, Nundini's isn't open on Sundays, so you'll have to get your weekend gelato fix on Saturday.  But if you work in the Galleria or Allen Parkway area, it's a great little spot for a delicious weekday lunch and some fantastic shopping, elegantly killing two birds with one stone.

Believe it or not, but despite the name, this is the place to go to find authentic Italian goods -- sandwiches, gelatos, and imported Italian products. They serve lunch from the deli and also homemade gelato that probably is the one of the best in Houston. I love the zuppe inglese gelato but they don't always make it.

This is the closest thing to a true Italian market in Houston.
